Dr. Michael Chang has been active in civic involvement in the community for over 25 years. Currently, he is serving his second term as Trustee of the Santa Clara County Board of Education. In the past, he served as Mayor and Councilmemeber for the City of Cupertino, as well as President and trustee for the Cupertino Union School District. By profession, Dr. Chang is a professor at De Anza College specializing in courses relating to community development, intercultural communication, and civic leadership. Since 1997, Dr. Chang has been Founder Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute which has gained recognition as a premier non-profit organization promoting civic leadership and education for Asian Americans and under-represented communities. Dr. Chang completed his graduate work at Stanford, earning a Ph.D. in education, MA in Asian Studies, and MA in Political Science. His undergraduate experience was at San Francisco State University, where he earned a BS in Business Administration and a BA in Philosophy and Religion. Dr. Chang is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Hong Kong and Silicon Valley resident for 35 years. He lives with his family in Cupertino.
Hon. Mayra Cruz serves as Board Vice President of the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District. Previously, she was Co-Director of the Vasconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action (VIDA), formerly known as the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement. She is also faculty and former Chair of the De Anza College Child Development and Education Department. With more than 30 years of program and community development experience, she has dedicated her professional career to linking educational systems to community based efforts at the early childhood, elementary, and college levels. Mayra was born in Puerto Rico, where she grew up and received formal education at the University of Puerto Rico. In 1979, she moved to San Jose California to pursue a graduate degree. In 1992 Mayra received a Master's Degree in Special Education at San Jose State University.
